Congratulations to Tasha P. in Russian 6 AP, for being named GHS Russian Scholar Laureate for the 2009-10 school year. She has excelled in speaking, listening, reading, writing, culture and grammar during her 6 years studying the lanugage. Tasha was one of 52 students across the US to be given this award.

50 Years of Russian in Glastonbury

This year we enjoyed celebrating our 50th year of teaching Russian in Glastonbury. Students, parents, teachers, administrators and members of the community participated in many events throughout the year. Highlights included the Hartford Symphony's Russian concert at GHS, Yale Russian Chorus and Russian Bazaar, Baskin Robbins' ice cream menu in Russian, Russian Immersion Day at Gideon Welles, visiting professor from the University of Oklahoma, Russian movies at Welles Turner Library, Barynya dance group performance at Smith, Ballet Russes at the Wadsworth Aetheneum, Notes from the Underground at the Yale Rep Theater, Russian exchange program (see below), Glastonbury Russian Day, Russian exhibit and scavenger hunt at the Glastonbury Historical Society.

Celebrating 50 Years of Russian

Glastonbury is celebrating its 50th anniversary of teaching Russian in the public schools. Many events are planned for the 2008-9 school year. Our first event--an all-Russian concert at Glastonbury High School by the Hartford Symphony--was a huge success. Join us for another wonderful concert--The Yale Russian Chorus will perform at First Church on Main St., Glastonbury on Sunday, November 16, 3:00. This event will also include a Russian Bazaar, with Russian books, calendars, notecards, jewelry, decorated eggs, crafts, bread, pasteries and much more.

Egg Decorating

GHS Russian Club students recently enjoyed an afternoon of egg decorating, in Russian and Ukrainian style. Students learned how to draw on the eggs with hot wax, using a kistka (an instrument with a small cup to hold the wax, and a pencil-like tip for drawing). The eggs are dipped in colors, starting with the lightest, then waxed again, then dipped again in other colors, until the egg is done. Here are some photos of eggs that we made.

GHS Russian Exchange Program

Our Russian exchange program continues this spring, with Glastonbury's first visit to St. Petersburg's School for Global Education. Students and teachers will stay with families, attend school, and visit many of St. Petersburg's interesting sites.

Built by Peter the Great in 1703 as his "Window to the West," St. Petersburg is a city of rivers, canals, palaces, museums, and summer white nights.

Fourteen students and 2 teachers from our partner school visited Glastonbury in the spring of 2007. Glastonbury has a long history of exchanges with Russia, Ukraine, and other countries that were once part of the Soviet Union. Our first exchange took place in 1989, shortly after Presidents Regan and Gorbachev signed an agreement to begin new cultural exchanges.
